The Switzerland–Liechtenstein–EU Triangle

Relations between Switzerland and Liechtenstein are extremely close, which is also reflected in the large number of joint agreements. In European policy, however, Liechtenstein and Switzerland chose different paths. While Liechtenstein joined the European Economic Area (EEA) on 1 May 1995, relations between Switzerland and the EU are largely based on bilateral agreements which, compared to the EEA as a whole, are less comprehensive and, above all, less strongly institutionalized. This research project examines how the different relations of Switzerland and Liechtenstein in relation to the EU have shaped the bilateral relations between Switzerland and Liechtenstein.
